The OptiMizer® contains a specially designed grill that floats on the hay. A horse must hold onto the hay to pull it through the grill. This action simulates grazing and limits the size of each mouthful. As a result horses will be chewing for a longer period of time to consume the same amount of hay.

This was one of the first concerns we considered. With early, lower prototypes two horses were observed with one or two feet in the feeder. In order to discourage this behavior the top of the OptiMizer® is now higher than an average galvanized water trough. In winter we recognized that snow build up could reduce that relative height and recommend keeping the feeder on top of the developing snow pack. Also, since the grill is in contact with the hay there is seldom any space below the grill. The grill is either pressing on the hay or sitting flat on the bottom, reducing the risk of hoof entrapment.

The OptiMizer® can fit 2 small square bales up to 16" tall x 20" wide x 40" long or flakes of hay from large square bales up to 36" x 36".

A key component of the design is the grill slot and locking tab. The grill slot and lock tab are designed to allow a person to remove the grill, not your horse.

Unlike a round bale sitting outside on the ground for a week or more, hay placed in an OptiMizer® is normally consumed within 1 to 3 days and is not wicking up water from the ground. Also the drain holes in the bottom provide good drainage and prevent water build up.

There are two grills available for the OptiMizer. A metal grill and a nylon grill. The metal grill is hot dipped galvanized to prevent rust and is constructed for maximum durability. The net grill is made from durable heavy gauge braided nylon rope that provides a flexible hay forming fit. Replacement net grills are available and can be installed by the owner.

Unlike painted products that are only coated on the outside or products such as gates that are made from galvanized steel.
